Still here still reading. My original post was meant for anybody thinking about buying an EX , that the stuff the YouTubers were complaining about that could put people off for me at least were unfounded and I for one am glad I bought my EX, I nearly didn’t after watching the reviews. As for problems people are having they don’t apply to me the car has performed faultlessly thus far. I do get a delay sometimes opening the car up if I’ve been nearby that’s meant to happen. I do get braking alerts and sometimes the car brakes but when it happens it’s never violent or out of control and I don’t consider that a fault. If anything I consider it’s confirmation the safety system is working. I think the car is a fine piece of engineering and raises the bar within the industry I might even do a YouTube video soon when I hit 20K miles and sing it’s praises.

There is a bit of a problem with Tesla’s though. Even if they are nice cars.

My next door neighbour has a Tesla not sure if it’s an m3 but they don’t rate it and canny wait to hand it back and other people post the same. I wouldn’t know never had one but I don’t like how they look that’s for sure. The EX is a much more aesthetic car to my eyes at least. I can’t compare anything other than the looks of the EX v Tesla but compared to my Polestar 2 & Mokka E the EX is streets ahead in all respects inside and out.

I agree, the aesthetics of Tesla are somewhat lacklustre. Importantly I've seen first hand (best friend has owned two) how poor the Tesla building quality is.

My EX30 hits every mark for me. I adore this car.

The build quality of Teslas was poor initially, particularly in the USA built versions, but it has improved steadily and those built in China and Europe in the last 3 years are far better and the equal of other large major manufacturers. Generalising that all Teslas are of poor build quality based on one person's experience of just two, of unstated age, is not exactly reasonable.

My 2023 Tesla Model Y is quite well built, although the EX30 is better. The Tesla has a harsher suspension and less sound insulation but does feel more planted and predictable when pushed, although in general the EX30 is a more pleasant car to drive. It's the software which really separates them out - the Tesla simply works, reliably; I've hardly touched the climate settings in 2 years, for example - it just works. Yes there have been a few issues with phantom braking, more so than with Volvo, but regular updates of the software (roughly every month) have fixed that and added quite a few features that were not there originally.

On the other hand, Musk's demand that everything is run under his "Vision" software means that my Tesla has the worst auto-wipers of any car I've owned this century because the camera system is not able to detect water on the windscreen. Also, not having proper perimeter sensors on the car makes reversing at night a complete lottery when the camera lens is dirty - the rear camera becomes useless and the proximity alarm does not then work. I have the dents to prove it.

If only Volvo would actually pay attention to the endless complaints about certain areas of the software and fix them, particularly locking and heating, then customer satisfaction (and sales) would be much improved.

This week I test drive a Polestar 2 and an EX30. While I think the Polestar is more stylish I also think it’s on the cusp of its design aging. I’ve decided to go for the EX30 which was a more engaging drive, was quieter with less road noise and a more obviously crafted and well designed interior. It also had wireless Apple play (Polestar is wired).

This was the first time I’ve driven an EV and the one advantage the Polestar had was its fabulous OPD, whereas the EX30 OPD appeared soft and pretty ineffective. The Polestar OPD has 3 settings (I drove it on standard) whereas the EX30 had no settings. On balance this isn’t a deal breaker for me but it’s just a pity as OPD was an unexpected revelation. On balance the EX30 wins. I am going for the single motor, extended range in brown (opps…..sand dune).
