How to drive an electric car economically
I had a middle class conundrum last night in the EV9.
It would only charge at the Tesla supercharger on the way to London at 42kwh and so after 25 mins I got bored. I would have been good for range to get home (280 round trip) but my M25 exit was closed and did a 20 mile diversion!
So on the way back in some awful weather, I had a choice.
Stop off for say 15 minutes to charge at the same supercharger and add like 10 kWh meaning I could carry on driving at 70 with the acc and seat massager on, OR
Sit in behind a HGV and limp home.
In the end I decided the weather was that bad so stuck the cruise control on and sat it out for an hour at 58MPH.
The difference between 70MPH and 50 when it comes to battery is profound, so much more efficient (though I’ll admit my brick of a car is about as aerodynamic as a detached house) but I got home with 15 miles in the ‘tank’ (5% battery remaining). Had I carried on at 70 MPH I would had run out 20 miles short.
In short, I suspect a steady 62 is the optimum of speed and battery to aim for!

I am starting to do my commute now regularly using under 30kwh….
However, I hit the AWD mode today and had some fun on a twisty B Road on the way to uttoxeter….. and completed my 15 journey at over 50kwh……..
