Hi Volvo fans.

I'm guessing (given they share a platform) that some of you considered (and maybe tested) a Smart # 1 before deciding on the EX30. In the UK at least a Smart # 1 Premium is about the same price as an EX30 Single Motor Extended Range Plus model. On paper the Smart seems to offer a lot more for the price: Instrument display in front of driver, head up display, Beats sound system, Apple CarPlay, proper buttons on the steering wheel, sunroof, more room in the back, sliding rear seats etc. OK, I know CarPlay is supposed to be coming and you can get some of the other stuff by paying more for the Ultra spec, but not all of it and as it stands today the Smart seems to offer more for the price. But comparing the activity of the two forums and the number of second hand vehicles on Autotrader I'm guessing a lot more EX30s have been sold. So, just wondering what swung it for you.

Thanks.

Andy

I really wanted a Smart #3 after the first deliveries and actual feedback from users but the Smart brand isn't available in my country. I looked into importing one but it was a big gamble with warranty & stuff.

But yes, both Smart and Zeeker equivalents offer a lot more bang for your buck. Also, you forgot to mention ventilated seats, cooled central storage, trunk kick sensor, remote with actual buttons, electronic sunroof cover and more :)

Felt the smart interior was OTT. Looked like it was trying too hard. I liked the exterior of the #3, but the #1 just didn’t look right at the rear imo. Also, the software is a lot more mature in the EX30.

Plus it had a smaller battery; less range, and slightly less performance. Also didn’t like how to get the performance model, it had to be tricked out with all the BRABUS styling and logos.

Because the smart is very ugly. And the roof at the back resembles the shape of a Wehrmacht helmet. Sorry.

Because it's simply obscene and unwatchable.

I wasn't keen on the Smart's "blobby" styling but the thing that really put me off was the catastrophic central display

Thanks for the replies.

So far it just seems to be down to aesthetics (either don't like the look of the car or don't like the graphics on the infotainment system) rather than anything functional. That's fair enough (no point spending money on something you don't like the look of) but obviously subjective.

100% subjective for sure. They are both great cars, but for different tastes. World would be boring without the choice :)

Depends what image a Volvo conjures up to you though :)

I'm old enough that I remember a Volvo as being the safe choice preferred by very boring middle aged men, usually in some insipid colour that matched their wardrobe, because heaven forbid you'd actually stand out from the crowd. At least they make them in yellow now :D
