Hey everyone, kia ora from Auckland, New Zealand (originally from Southampton, Uk),
Volvo NZ finally released the EX30 and I took possession of my ultra SMER yesterday (crystal white and indigo).
Having owned 6 BMWs over the past 20 years, moving to a Volvo is definitely a culture shift.
I’ve had a BMW i3s for the past 6 years, and the EX30 seemed like an ideal progression… but not without its challenges!
So far loving it (aside from the glaring lack of Apple CarPlay which I’m seriously missing after using it in my i3). It’s lower than the i3, just 4cm wider and 20cm longer, but feels huge both inside and out. So quiet and spacious, the seats are supportive and comfortable, and the suspension is just as good as all the reviewers described.
A few things I am getting used to.
1. In the i3 I just needed to unlock the car and the charging would stop and release the cable, I could then take the cable out. In the Volvo it appears I need to actually turn the car on and get inside and turn the charging off on the screen to unlock the cable. I guess I could use the app.
2. BMW’s one pedal drive is far more aggressive … I could literally drive 50km to and from work and never use the brake. I’m finding the Volvo unpredictable in how and when the one pedal drive will stop the car. I’m sure I’ll get used to it.
3. I can’t quite work out the different lane assist, lane keeping aid etc. I don’t mind it telling me I’ve drifted while I’m driving, but I don’t want it steering for me in Pilot Assist. I need to work out which option is which … can I have one without the other?
That’s all for now… I’m sure I’ll have more questions soon, the user manual is next to useless (on par with the BMW ones to be fair!)
Haere ra!

If speaking about AC charging, after the recharge reaches the predefined level in the EX30 (I set up to 80%), to remove the cable I only need to unlock the car (I use the keycard), and eventually after closing the lid usually the EX30 autolocks if no doors were opened in this meanwhile.

John from Canada here,
I'm still waiting for my Ultra SMER Onyx black and Indigo. Best estimates for delivery are late August to early September. Like you, I'm transitioning from a 2018 BMW i3s to the EX30. I look forward to hearing about potential updates to the OS, Android auto /Carplay and your experience with OPD.
Like you, I rarely use my brakes with the aggressive i3s regenerative braking, and was hoping for the same in the EX30. Let's hope for updates providing braking options.
Cheers,

Welcome AuckDoc to this forum
I think the OPD is just right - but then I haven't had a car with it before.
You can turn off Pilot Assist in Settings. Then you're just left with ACC.
You can also leave Pilot Assist on and then use the steering wheel button on the left steering wheel buttons to switch between the two - that's what I do.
You can't downgrade ACC to just CC though, albeit you can alter the spacing. It seems presently to default to "Long" which would be fine for motorway driving but not tootling around town.

Was wondering, now that you've had the EX30 for a while, how you're finding the OPD?
Coming from an i3s as well, I'm very curious.
Love not using brakes.

Unfortunately I always have to use the brakes…. I tried Tesla 2 times and the OPD option is much better there. I don't know why Volvo made it so bland.
