I sat in the rear seat of my Ultra yesterday. Close to the light on each side of the roof section there is a black plastic fitting. Does anyone know what it is? Part of the HVAC system possibly?

Is this what you are talking about?

If it is, I know what it is.

The XC40 had four of these. They allowed for the fitting of a mesh net behind either the rear seats, or behind the front seats, to prevent unrestrained luggage (or animals) being thown forwards onto the passenger area in the event of an accident. Two metal fittings fitted into these on the roof, and two clips on adjustable straps to the luggage net retainers in the boot or on the back of the front seat rail sliders as required. The whole thing could then be pulled tight. It works very well.

This net is different from the EX30 luggage net Volvo sell, which only goes on the boot floor and is stretchy, not stiff.

This net was a standard free accessory with some models of the XC40, but is not with the EX30.

I kept my net when I sold my XC40. It fits the EX30 perfectly. The EX30 only has fittings for use behind the front seats, not in the boot. It an be used with the rear seat up or folded down.

They can be bought new online (for the XC40 - but do fit the EX30) for about £150, but are for sale on ebay for a lot less.

Ebay picture (selected at random) attached.

Interesting!

I knew they were for the Volvo cargo net but I've also seen it reported that the fitting differs slightly from "normal" Volvos and thus isn't compatible with their accessories.

It seems common to be able to get hook fittings to go in these (note the two sides are mirrored not the same) but I've hesitated about getting any because of the above - and I don't really need them in any case!

What passengers complain about is the lack of grab handles (must be my driving!) so something which offered that functionality would be useful...

Others on the internet have suggested it could be used for clothes hangers so I've just been out and tried. Seems perfect! Pretty secure from falling out using this type.

They are for the XC40 net. (On the XC40 the rear seat fittings are behind coat hooks.)

Pictures attached.

ImageI see now - the plastic hooks are somewhat different to that.

My XC40 were similar to those.

You set them in at a 90 degree angle, then rotated them through 90 degrees and they acted as coat hooks. Then when you wanted to put in the net you rotated them the other way and they came off, leaving the fittings available for the net.

The EX30 fitting is slightly different. The net fits it perfectly, but that doesn't mean that the hook does.
