For those that need it:

Apple CarPlay documentation has been updated to contain activation instructions. No reports of it working yet though.

I do have one question haha - is there a carplay app in the App Store? Not ever when I have looked?

Im not sure you can open CarPlay on your phone as no app exists?

Volvo are referring to launching the CarPlay app in the car, not on your phone. It will be available in the upcoming 1.4.1 update.
