Downloaded and installed release 1.4 yesterday. Took about 20 minutes. Everything ran smoothly, easier than expected.
Last week I got many notifications, even several times a day, that a new software release was available and I needed to enable automatic software updates (probably they want to ensure that it is not disabled)
In fact, after I enabled the automatic update, I didn't get any more notifications for a couple of days, and yesterday morning I got the message that version 1.4 was ready to be installed, and after an hour the notification also arrived on the car's display.

7p kw overnight at mine, topped up by solar if the sun shines for free!!

That's fine, I spent months doing the maths before committing. It doesn't make sense to spend thousands on a driveway and charger when most of mileage is business and can be claimed back, and I can add 60 miles for free using a 3 pin plug on office days. I'd rather spend money flying abroad on a couple of holidays a year than adding infrastructure just to charge a company car.

Not that any of this is relevant to a software update topic, so I'll leave it there.

Unfortunately I'm having exactly the same issue. Basically I've never had an OTA update. My car came with 3.1. Keep getting notified about v4 being ready but it never gets downloaded. App says auto updates is enabled although sometimes randomly says it is disabled. Very frustrating. I suspect I will have to take it to the dealer at some point.
Do you unlock the car using the proprietary profile?
Happy to say I randomly got a notification on my screen, after completing a journey, that 1.4 was ready to download, all done now. Seems to be a delay between notifications on the app and when the download is actually ready. In my case about 10 days. I didn't change anything, much as I tried, to force the download.

Welcome to this forum.

CarPlay was still being advised as standard when I last checked last week. It's of no use to me so I haven't worried about it but the software implementation generally is really poor.

Finally last night as I went to bed I noticed my car was going to update to 1.4 - after TWENTY notifications. I've turned the screenshot round here to show you better.

All seems to have gone through without a hitch once initiated.

I have read that Volvo has emailed everyone who has the new EX90 (which is 3 times the cost of an EX30) on order (delivery times 7-9 months on Volvo UK's website). The email has a list of 6 software items which will not be available on delivery but will be added OTA after delivery. One of these items is Apple Carplay.

Volvo's latest electric vehicles are facing some issues. Earlier this week the company confirmed that the EX30—which was supposed to reach the U.S. this summer with a mid-$30K starting price—is being delayed until 2025 after the U.S. jacked up tariffs on Chinese-built EVs. Now it seems that the company's flagship, the 2025 EX90, which finally started production after itself being pushed back from an early 2024 arrival date, will be delivered with some of its equipment not operational.

Volvo has begun sending emails to customers who have reservations for the EX90, linking to a list of features that "may be delayed when taking delivery of your EX90," as reported by Motor1. The list includes two driver assistance items: cross-traffic alert with automatic braking and curve speed assist, which reduces the car's speed when using the adaptive cruise control or Pilot Assist system. The site also states that the lidar system will receive an update in the future to allow the system's full potential.

The delays will also affect the cabin, where customers will have to wait to be able to utilize wireless Apple CarPlay and will have to stick with the infotainment screen and digital gauge cluster's dark mode for the time being. Charging is also affected. The bi-directional charging capability that would allow owners to send power from the car back to their home or into the grid won't be available at first. The Smart Charging program that automatically determines the best times to charge based on pricing and efficiency, while also factoring in scheduled departures, is also delayed.

Volvo also says that owners will experience slight battery drainage while parked as a result of the car needed to keeping the EX90's core computer powered. The EX90 will lose roughly three percent over 24 hours, and if parked for 72 hours without charging, the energy use will cease as the car enters a "deep sleep" mode to conserve juice. Volvo says this will be fixed with a planned future update.

The EX90's "Plug & Charge" feature is also missing from the first batch of deliveries. This allows owners to plug into chargers without having to use an app or credit card, with the owner billed automatically via a charging account set up in advance. The majority of these features will be made available through free over-the-air updates, Motor1 reported. Some may require owners to visit a Volvo dealer, and the automaker will notify those owners ahead of time.

Apple CarPlay seems to be an issue on these EX Volvos.

But we should consider...

How many cars with Android Automotive has already available Apple CarPlay?
