Thanks Andrew. Mine just isn’t switching over to CarPlay when a carplay notification comes in. Really useful to know. I’ll continue troubleshooting!andrewollason wrote: ↑Sat Sep 28, 2024 5:09 pm So the message notification comes through like this to me. Pressing engages Siri who reads the message and then invites you to reply. If I’m on the android screen it switches over to CarPlay in order to do its stuff.

Folks, we need to understand if the UIs are independent of each other. It seems that when CarPlay is connected notifications direct to CarPlay take priority over iOS notifications 'ported' to Android (as when an iPhone is connect via BlueTooth but without CarPlay enabled)tombarnes wrote: ↑Fri Sep 27, 2024 5:41 pmI have the same experience on both counts.RichTea wrote: ↑Fri Sep 27, 2024 4:47 pm Can I ask a question (or two) about people’s experiences with CarPlay?
1. I have found that when I have my phone connected via CarPlay but am on the standard Home Screen, I’m not getting any CarPlay notifications through (e.g. when I receive a text or iMessage). I’ve checked all the usual suspects re: allowing notifications but I’m getting nothing. What are other people’s experiences with this?
2. Again when on the Home Screen and I have music playing via Apple Music, I only see the title of the song and not the artist. I’m fairly sure Spotify built into the car showed both on the Home Screen. Again, is this the same for everyone else?
TIA
Richard
1. The two User Interfaces' notifications are totally independent of each other. I will have a look tomorrow, but I know before using CarPlay iMessage notifications, for example would come across to Android (in basic form) to the notification bell at the top of the screen. But I think that when an iPhone is connected with CarPlay enabled, this interface overrides the notifications via Android.
2. Not noticed that, but perhaps an oversight and may be solved in future.
I will address a tiny elephant in the room here, from someone grateful for this update: having CarPlay on this OS, in this car, is somewhat a square peg in a round hole.
I had feared (for my music) this would be the downfall of the car (I'm glad for 1.4.2). I really crave having CarPlay and I am thrilled we have it. 99% for Apple Music and the simple UI. It's missing stuff like EV-Intelligent navigation, but this is to do with the API and future evolutions will allow this, but may be hardware limited and therefore will be in later Volvo's.
From this article alone https://www.theverge.com/23958821/volvo ... to-decoder I wouldn't be surprised if Volvo took CarPlay and ran with it in the future, the opposite to Polestar, weirdly! I reckon we are in a transitionary period of in-car operating systems, and the insights to the future of CarPlay could well lay the foundation for some company's in-car operating systems. Will Volvo be one? Is that why they have rammed this square peg in the round hole?

I don’t think that is in doubt. However, if you look at the difference between my experience of CarPlay getting a notification and Andrew’s experience, you’ll see that when Andrew gets a message on CarPlay, the screen switches from the Android Home Screen to CarPlay to display the notification in CarPlay. In contrast, I don’t get that UI switching at all. I have to go into CarPlay manually to see the notification in that UI.tombarnes wrote: ↑Sat Sep 28, 2024 7:44 pmFolks, we need to understand that the UIs are independent of each other. Issues with connectivity to the CarPlay app. I may have a solution...
When setting up the CarPlay app the car requires access to both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on your phone (meaning that any connection between the phone a wi-fi network, such as my home wi-fi, needs to be terminated) on your phone. When first set up CarPlay will fire up as expected.
This is clearly using a wireless set up for CarPlay.
Sometimes when you go back to the car, CarPlay will not start up and requires manual intervention to get it to work. At other times CarPlay will start as expected. What’s going on?
Getting CarPlay to fire up successfully each time has been frustrating but seems to be linked to what happens on exiting the car.
At home (before the 1.4.2 update) when I exit the car, my phone will automatically connect to the home wi-fi. I have noticed that since the 1.4.2 update and activating CarPlay the automatic connection (on my phone) does not happen, so I have been manually selecting the home wi-fi to connect it on leaving the car. When I do this, I noticed that a warning message comes up to tell me that it going to disconnect CarPlay. Disconnecting CarPlay, on my phone, with the car locked up in the garage at least 10meterst away, seems like a sensible thing to do. Alas this is the cause of the issue. Once you manually force the phone to connect to a wi-fi network the CarPlay connection is closed, and it will not automatically connect to the car when you get back in.
So, I tried doing nothing, that is getting CarPlay to work, then leaving the car (locked up and tucked away) and then watching my phone. I reasoned that it could not possibly hold an open CarPlay connection with the car locked up and out of range. As expected, (and observed) the phone does not connect to my home wi-fi on exit, then a couple of minutes later it does connect automatically to the home wi-fi, and as it turns out does not terminate the CarPlay connection, meaning that the next time I get into the car, CarPlay fires up almost instantly. I have tested this more than 10 times, and I now have 100% reliable connection to CarPlay and after a few minutes on leaving the car, the phone automatically connects to my home wi-fi as it did before the 1.4.2 OTA…hope this helps
Cheers All
