Patience is key (pun intended). Have the keyfob on you. Touch the black strip behind the handle and wait till it unlocks. Then yank the handle. It works every time for me. Need to make sure not to touch the indentation with the thumb or any finger unknowingly.

Welcome to this forum.

I've not had to wait at all once the handle is pulled but it's annoying in that it sometimes works fine

Whats this? For the EX30?

I too had / have this issue, i find walking up to the car a little slower than usual does the trick, i was contemplating turning the proximity off but my daily routine is school run then work and it was frustrating having to put the fob up to the driver side door to unlock it and then walk round to get my four year old into car. So proximity turned on, and at first was very temperamental but now it kind of works more than it doesn’t, and I find a slow approach to the car works most of the time.

We definitely need a key with lock and unlock buttons, like Teslas have...:(

Spotted in another place:

Since I come across those posts about the key fob „malfunctioning“ very often - here’s some explanation and advise:
I’ve been in touch with the Volvo Customer Care Denmark (where I’m from) and got told, that there is some kind of sleep mode for battery saving of the key fob. This sleep mode is automatically activated, when your leaving your car, but the fob is still in „range“ and non-stop communicating with the car.
(Info: the fob works on at least two canals, uwb (high range) and some Bluetooth-ish thing, the uwb is for the proximity lock, to reckognise your approaching the car, and the second canal is to finally unlock/lock the car when you’re actually nearby)
So, as long as the uwb is able to send/receive signals to/from the car, it is remaining constantly active, which drains the battery. So, to avoid this, there is sleeping mode. To unlock the car, when fob is in sleeping mode, pull the handle (driverside) twice in a short interval, and it unlocks. Also, putting the fob on the card reader on your door, facing the Volvo logo towards you, will do the trick.
Generally, if your driveway is too close to your „key storage“ try a box that blocks those signals or find a spot for your key that’s further away.
This „issue“ should be gone as soon as the integration of the key moves to the mobile phones
