Hi, 2 weeks into my EX30 Ultra experience and it’s thrown up a fault. “Unable to charge 12V battery. Stop safely. Service required.”

Has anyone else experienced this? Is at a software glitch or a hard problem?

Welcome to this forum.

There's been at least one other report of a similar instance and they had to have the car recovered, but I can't recall whether a detailed explanation was given - or even which forum it was in.

Thanks for the welcome and reply. I’ve found similar in other Volvo forums without any identified resolution. I’ll wait for Volvo Assistance and update this thread.

Volvo assistance called me annd advised me to drive to dealer. That was a huge mistake as 12v battery lost all power, the car simply stopped and would go no further. Eventually recovered to dealer for investigation.

My twin motor plus is in dry dock after problematic recovery from holiday home in Anglesey.
After display issues including failure to shut down on locking the car our breakfast was interrupted by the car alarm. I could not gain access to silence it.
Only minutes after I received an alert - battery dangerously low, start car and run for at least 30 min.
Standard recovery impossible and we waited till evening for specialist TowTrack car lift. They held car overnight and delivered it to Chester Volvo today.
There is no access to the 12v battery even if car unlocked.
I await a cure.

Welcome to this forum.

If the car is unlocked you can pop the bonnet, take out four clips under windscreen, and take off the plastic trim to reveal the battery.

Same situation here. Yesterday when arriving home the display showed the 12v unable to charge advice (car had 77% of driving battery), after 30 minutes on highway I’ve strange. Parked in front of home, take the grocery shopped in, closed the car and opened again, turned on and make loop in home block. No more message. Parked in the ramp. This morning went out of home to take kids to school it opened but the screen was off and once I pressed the brake it push my feet back and didn’t turn on. After a few seconds the rear taillights started blinking and the boot didn’t open. It went totally off. Waiting for volvo assistance towing it to the dealer and diagnoses it. My mistake was parking it on ramp with other cars inside garage, it is impossible to move it and the other two cars are blocked. Got an neighbor borrowed car to take kids to school. If this happen to you park it in a easy place for towing…

Just to bring news, after a week pick up the car again from Volvo dealer. It wasn’t the battery but the system that charges it. They said that it was the first case in Brazil and thats why took a week to identify and have the part delivered to be changed. The internal invoice that I signed showed a 3k usd price tag in the part wich make me worried about the parts price after warranty is over…

Did you have any issues with AC charging prior or try and charge it after you received the warning? My onboard charger failed and took them 5 weeks to diagnose after it wouldn’t charge on AC (DC worked fine). This also affected the 12V.

Mine wasn’t the only car in the service centre with this problem - it is possible there is a broader issue with the EX30 onboard charger. It would be handy if anyone else with an onboard charger issue also posts a reply.
